Organic Mattresses and Natural Sleep Products

Natural Mattresses & Your Health

Many consumers are aware that toxic chemicals in the home—including those in mattresses, bedding and furniture—are dangerous to health. Chemical flame retardants have been linked to cancer, obesity, infertility and developmental brain disorders. Along with other unsafe chemicals in synthetic foams and textiles, they off-gas into indoor air and degrade into easily-ingested dustparticles. Exposure to these compounds has resulted in unprecedented levels in our bodies, with children carrying the highest load. Nontoxic, natural latex foam mattresses without flame retardants offer a luxurious, healthful alternative.

Old Mattress Disposal

Home of SERTA IComfort and ISeries & TEMPUR-PEDIC

How to dispose of an old mattress

Disposing of an old mattress is a situation that many people face at some point in their lives, but often, we don’t know what to do with them so they end up on the curb with your regular trash. Even if your city doesn't take them.

While most trash is compressed in landfills, mattresses pose a problem because they can not be disposed of similarly. Because of this, they take up an inordinate amount of space; and the metal springs inside of the mattress can clog up the machinery used in landfills.

Conventional mattresses today have many chemicals, such as those used in the flame retardant, in them that can be toxic if they reach the groundwater supply.

So what are your options other than the trash heap?

First, many mattress retailers, including American Mattress Gallery will remove your mattress for you upon delivery of your new mattress.

Donation:
If the mattress is in good condition, see if any friends or family could use it, or know anyone who could.
It can be difficult to donate mattresses to thrift stores, because of the risk of bed bugs and other pests, so if you choose to go this route, be prepared to make more than one call. But if you choose to go that route, some places, like Salvation Army, will pick up donations in some areas (although due to the limited number of trucks, it most likely won’t be that same day). Other places you can try are churches, whether it’s one you go to or not, they may have someone in the congregation in need; or homeless shelters, battered women shelters, and refugee resettlement programs, which are all great places to look into donating other old goods as well, but often depend on the individual facilities in your area.

If none of those work out for you, there’s also Freecycle, or a local furniture bank.

Recycling:
If the mattress isn’t in good condition, or none of the above work out for you, you can consider recycling it. Most mattress recycling services have a nominal fee, however, the condition of the mattress doesn’t matter as long as it isn’t infested with bedbugs or other pests.
Some places in Michigan that recycle mattresses include:

  • Recycle Ann Arbor: there’s a $3 entry fee, and the drop-off station is open to the general public. There is an additional fee for mattresses based on the size of the mattress (ranging from $7.50 for a crib mattress to $20 for a king or queen mattress or box spring). They then send the mattresses to Michigan Mattress Recyclers located out of Gaylord, MI.
  • Bay Area Recycling: located in Traverse City, MI and directly involved with Michigan Mattress Recycling. There’s a $10 fee per mattress no matter what the size is.
  • You can also find places near you by searching on earth911.
