Common Misconceptions of Adjustable Beds

Adjustable BedAn adjustable bed with a memory foam mattress, such as a Tempur-Pedic or Serta IComfort, is arguably one of the most comfortable ways to sleep, but many people that haven’t tried them don’t really understand much about adjustable beds. We’ve rounded up some of the most common misconceptions about adjustable beds so you can banish those myths and try this one of a kind sleeping experience for yourself. If you think an adjustable bed isn’t for you, think again. Once you try it, you’ll see what you’re missing.

Adjustable Beds Are Too Expensive

Adjustable beds aren’t cheap. Many people complain that this type of bed is too expensive, but generally those with this complaint haven’t tried an adjustable bed. Once you spend a night sleeping on a great bed with a quality mattress, you won’t be thinking so much about the expense, rather how good you feel.

Many adjustable bed owners simply look at their purchase as an investment. It might cost a bit upfront, but your bed base is probably a once in a lifetime purchase. Once you make the initial investment you have a bed for life. Over the years your purchase will amount to pennies a day for a quality of sleep that can’t be matched.

Adjustable Beds Need Special Sheets, Etc.

Another common misconception about adjustable beds is that they need special sheets, mattresses and bedding. This isn’t true. Adjustable bed bases use standard size mattress. You can choose your favorite type of mattress to use with your base. If you love memory foam, get a memory foam mattress. If you prefer a latex mattress, get one of those instead. Since adjustable beds use standard mattresses, they fit standard sheets. Sometimes the ends will pop off when the head or foot of the bed is adjusted, but if you want to avoid this, there are special adjustable bed sheets.

Adjustable Beds Are Only For People With Health Problems

Many people assume that adjustable beds are only for those with health problems or limited mobility, but this isn’t true. They are popular with those with special health concerns, but they are also popular with healthy people. Adjustable beds offer a variety of health benefits to all their users. Generally adjustable bed users notice a better quality of sleep and increased comfort when using an adjustable bed.

Adjustable beds are one of the best ways to sleep. If you want to improve the way you sleep and feel better, consider investing in an adjustable bed Today!!!!!

How Hot Your Mattress Feels

When something is considered to be “hot” or “cold” what is it that really determines the reality of that feeling? Is it the temperature of the two objects? Is it the difference in that temperature? Or is it just the rate of the transfer of heat between the two objects? When determining what you like in a sleep system in relation to these ideas can be very important to your comfort while you sleep.

What are heat, specific heat, and heat transfer and how does it affect you?

Heat is the kinetic energy of an object measured in joules, or the vibration energy of the molecules. Specific heat is the amount of energy that has to be put into an object in order to raise the object one degree centigrade, specific heat can also be visualized as the ability of a substance to resist heat change. Heat transfer is the major thing that a sleeper should look at when trying out a bed. Heat transfer is based on the contact that you and your bed share as well as the temperature difference; it is an exchange of vibrations. The more in contact you are, the more heat transfer that will occur between you and your mattress, so when you sleep on a body conforming mattress you are allowing for a higher rate of heat exchange between you and your bed. Substances with a high specific heat and density, for example the gel based memory foams in the I-series by Serta, will take longer for your body heat to warm up so when you climb into bed they will have an initially cooler feel for a longer period of time.

When you look for the extended feeling of “coolness” there are many different factors. The most important one is the fact that you are giving off a fair amount of your heat and it is not retained in the covers with you. The air feels cool all the time right? This is because for every molecule you warm up it leaves your vicinity to be replaced by another one that is cooler. Modern beds are working of this concept of moving and dissipating heat like the new mattress lineups like the Tempur-Breeze series from Tempur-Pedic. The Tempur- Breeze is using technology to allow for better air flow and heat transfer using thick celled foam walls to allow for more movement of heat and a more breathable model that channels the heat out through the air passageways.

Other things to consider when sleeping that a spring mattress, though it may seem to make you sleep cooler isn’t always the best option to consider. Blood flow is important when you sleep because it keeps you from tossing and turning in your bed and keeps you rested and healthy, but when there is more blood flow your body will sleep hotter. Blood is one of the major contributors that transfers and transports heat through the body. Spring mattresses can restrict blood flow by increasing pressure in the wrong areas of the body whereas memory foam is pressure sensitive and distributes and evens out the pressure on the body. When considering your mattress take into account the time you will spend beyond the time in the store and make a careful and thought out decision, for many hours will be spent on a mattress.

Porcello As Closer

Exciting News as Spring Training is getting under way!! The Detroit News Reports:

Lakeland, Fla. — We learned a couple of things Monday as the Tigers dealt with a closer crisis they might want to resolve before spring camp adjourns in 25 days.

Development No. 1: The Tigers could, in a wild scenario, decide a new and improved Rick Porcello is at least worth discussing as a ninth-inning choice now that rookie Bruce Rondon's candidacy has been wounded, perhaps fatally, by a string of ugly outings.

"We'll be very thorough in looking at our options," said Jim Leyland, the Tigers manager, who with his boss, Dave Dombrowski, has watched as Rondon's mishaps have jolted an otherwise peaceful camp.
Development No. 2: Jose Valverde and his agent, Scott Boras, are open to signing a one-year contract if the Tigers are interested.

"Jose Valverde would be thrilled to pitch for the Tigers on a one-year deal," Boras said during a Monday telephone conversation.

That's news when it has been generally assumed Boras-Valverde wanted a multiple-year package for a free-agent reliever who this month turns 35. The Tigers, though, appear not to be as concerned about money as with Valverde's skills following a so-so 2012 season and multiple playoff disasters that made his return to Detroit improbable, if not an absurdity.

Porcello was Monday's big story for assorted reasons.

He was being scouted heavily during the Tigers-Astros game at Marchant Stadium, an 8-5 Detroit victory during which Porcello threw four blue-ribbon innings.

Porcello is a hot ticket for teams hungry for an extra starter the Tigers believe they can afford to trade.
Porcello, though, could in theory end up as a pitcher the Tigers might at least consider if their closer chasm isn't bridged.

Porcello throws strikes. And while he doesn't throw the ball past hitters, Leyland said Monday that, "I don't think you have to be a strikeout pitcher," to be an effective closer. And he used the Tigers' old workhorse, Todd Jones, as an example.

It could get bumpy

This isn't to say the Tigers are making grand plans to finish games with Porcello. They absolutely are not. But neither are they dismissing his name as they try to patch a huge hole that must be filled ahead of Opening Day.

Porcello will at least be discussed as the Tigers try to head off a potential bullpen debacle. Monday's realities suggested life could be tense, at least for a while.

Rondon is temporarily on the sidelines working on mechanics. If he straightens out and throws with last year's fire and control, he could re-emerge as the team's ninth-inning favorite. But be careful about that wager. Rondon is 22 years old and hasn't thrown a single pitch in a regular-season big league game.
The Tigers could go with last autumn's savior, Phil Coke, who did a marvelous job during the playoffs. But they are reluctant to make Coke a closer when he is beyond valuable as a left-hander they need in earlier matchup situations.

Coke also can pitch longer than a single inning. The Tigers would prefer to keep him in his old job when Leyland needs quality options that can keep a game under control ahead of the ninth.
Other possibilities remain but aren't at this point tempting to the Tigers.

Joaquin Benoit is soon to turn 36. The Tigers can use him sparingly but not regularly as a ninth-inning choice. Ditto for Octavio Dotel, 39. Al Alburquerque and Brayan Villarreal have durability issues that don't mesh well with a closer's workload.

Dombrowski is temporarily stuck. Rondon isn't formally out of the picture but has moved in that direction in only 10 days.

Valverde, meanwhile, clearly isn't attractive to the Tigers.

Move him or use him?

The remainder of Detroit's back-end committee has strengths better-suited to earlier innings. Which brings us back to Porcello.

He is a trade chip whose value appears to be rising by the day. Could the Tigers deal him for a closer? Or, can they squeeze a few months from Valverde as they buy time for Rondon?

A third option: Could the Tigers decide a guy with Porcello's stuff — better now that his old bugaboo pitch, the slider, is history — and low pulse is worth a shot?

Porcello was asked about this Monday. He might as well have been asked if he had considered playing wideout for the Lions.

"I don't even have a comment," Porcello said. "But if it gets to that point, I'll do whatever I can to help win games for the Tigers."

It's gotten to that point.

Closing options

With Bruce Rondon struggling, here are some of the options Tigers are considering:
Phil Coke, left-hander: Tigers believe he is more valuable as middle reliever.
Rick Porcello, right-hander: Has had great spring. Tigers might be tempted to try him as closer.
Jose Valverde, right-hander: A long shot. Unsigned free agent, but Tigers have serious doubts.
Brian Wilson, right-hander: A free agent who is still recovering from elbow surgery.
Tigers Committee: Octavio Dotel, Joaquin Benoit, Al Alburquerque, Brayan Villarreal, Coke, etc.

How long have you been sleeping on your mattress?

5 years? 10 years? Or even 20? It might be time to switch it up. The general rule of thumb is to replace at 8. That means to replace your old mattress every 8 years. Not everyone does, but technology does change, and the beds today are more advanced, and provide more support for getting the a good night’s sleep. Did you know that every 10 years the weight of a mattress doubles due to dead dust mites?  Also, that the average person sweats 4 gallons a month while they sleep? Gross.

That hopefully makes you think about how soon you will be replacing your mattress. If you recently bought a bed that’s great- we hope you are getting a good restful night’s sleep. If it’s coming up on that 8 year anniversary you might want to read our How To Buy a Mattress Guide.

Start by selecting a size. This is probably the easier of decisions to come. Make sure you measure the room where the mattress is going, so you know what you can accommodate. The following are the dimensions of mattresses:  Twin 38” x 75” – Twin XL 38” x 80” – Full 54” x 75” – Queen 60” x 80” – Traditional King 76” x 80” – Cal King 72” x 84”.

Pick your comfort next. Do you have a bad back? You might want to consider a firmer bed. Do you like to imagine you are sleeping on a cloud? A softer bed might be better for you. There are many levels of comfort: Firm, Plush, PillowTop, EuroTop, Pillow soft, and more. It is best to lay on each mattress. Once you start to narrow down what comfort level you like, spend at least 15 minutes on the mattress or mattresses you have selected. It is important to try out the mattresses in the position you typcially sleep in at home: side, stomach, back, etc.

Choosing a model before or after you lie on the mattress is fine. It may be tempting to buy the cheaper bed when comparing prices, however don’t let price decide your next bed. There is a reason there are top brand names of mattresses. Remember you will sleep on this mattress for a third of your life for the next few years. Make sure you educate yourself as much as possible. Also be sure to ask about company policies, comfort exchanges, and warranties. It is good to know all of this before purchasing.
The last and final decision is what your mattress will be on. Hopefully not the floor, as the bed is supposed to support you! You will need to decide between box spring, foundation or adjustable base.  Most people have a box spring and that is primarily what most manufacturers use, but there has been a recent spike in adjustable bases. Adjustable bases allow you to sleep more comfortably, watch TV, or use electronics in the bedroom. A box spring is a good choice as well: the coils inside the box spring act as little shock absorbers. A working box spring has been considered the best way to build a mattress set.

More recently, however, technology in beds has changed. A foundation is a non-flexing base that makes a great “do not disturb” sleep foundation. Simmons Beautyrest beds are known for using these foundations.

Lastly, highly consider purchasing a mattress protector or mattress cover. They can run you around $50 to $100 or more. This will be worth the investment in the case that any accidents occur. This will keep your mattress cleaner and protected from bodily fluids or other spills.

Come in and ask me about a complete sleep system today!!!

Is It Easier to Read in an Adjustable Bed?

Adjustable BedGrabbing a book and reading it while you nod off to sleep is one of life simplest pleasures, but sometimes it can be a bit uncomfortable. There is a solution besides skipping the book. An adjustable bed is a great way to get comfortable while reading, doing crafts, watching TV and living your life.

If you’ve been wanting to make extra time for reading in this coming year, consider getting an adjustable bed. With the right bed and a few simple changes to your lifestyle, you can explore new worlds as you immerse yourself in a great book. Whether you love classics, sci-fi or something else, an adjustable bed can change the way you read.

Sitting Up or Laying Down in Minutes

A push of a button is all it takes to transform an adjustable bed from laying down to sitting up. This makes it easy to climb into bed with a good book and find a comfortable position for reading. You’ll find beds with both wired and wireless remotes. Most beds require that both you and your partner share the same position, but as long as you both enjoy reading, this shouldn’t be a problem.

You’ll Read More When It’s Convenient

One of the biggest hurdles many people face when trying to find time to read is a busy schedule. They want to read more, but just don’t have the time. An adjustable bed can help with this problem. While it can’t make more time in the day, it can help you to read in the evenings rather than tossing and turning while you wait to fall asleep or dozing off in front of the TV. Setting up your bedroom with a bedside table, a lamp and a few good books will also help you to foster the habit. When it’s easy to read, you’ll find fewer excuses and you’ll be able to achieve your goal.

Make the commitment this year to read more. Whether it’s the magazine that you’ve been dying to read or the book that’s been on your reading list for years, an adjustable bed will help. You’ll find that reading is much more comfortable when you can position your body without having to use a mountain of pillows.

The truth about Insomnia

Most people suffer from some kind of insomnia. It is most common problem people have with sleep, however most people only have acute insomnia. But don't worry it can easily be treated, most people don't practice sleep hygiene; they will just go to bed and think nothing of it. The truth is many things can prevent us from easily falling asleep, staying asleep or even getting restorative sleep. A way to combat this is to use good sleep hygiene; which means going to bed when you're tired (not when it's bed time), not watching TV or reading while in bed, don't eat or drink anything but water at least 2 hours before bed. There are more things you can practice but those will make a difference. Sometimes it could be as simple as you are not comfortable enough in your own bed, you could flip it or you can get a new mattress (here at American Mattress Gallery).

Things that cause Insomnia vary from person to person, it could something as simple as new sleep environment or something as bad as major depression (which I would strongly recommend you go see a doctor). You can also self-induce insomnia by just thinking about it, if you are having a tough time trying to fall asleep get up! Move around, to something that will exhaust your body and use brain power so when you do return to bed you will be thinking and moving less. Depending on how strong-willed (ormajorly stressed or depressed) you are sleeping pills most likely won't work, and are going to have to work through your problems with someone.

When I use to have insomnia I tried all of this stuff and it did not work. I worked out, ate healthier and tried to be an over all better person. But what I found was it wasn't that I was stressed or sad I was just doing things that I didn't like to do. I wasn't happy but I wasn't sad, I was just blah. So I got a new job, hung out with my friends more and tried to do more things that I liked. With a very busy schedule I found it difficult to stay awake, so when I got home around midnight I would just crash. Now falling asleep still wasn't very easy but staying asleep and getting restortive sleep was back to normal. So in some cases you are just doing this to yourself and you need to switch up your life style a little bit.

I hope this helped you in some way, and I hope you get the good nights sleep you deserve. So start this new life with a new mattress and get on to a healthier more fulfilled life.
