Common Misconceptions of Adjustable Beds

Adjustable BedAn adjustable bed with a memory foam mattress, such as a Tempur-Pedic or Serta IComfort, is arguably one of the most comfortable ways to sleep, but many people that haven’t tried them don’t really understand much about adjustable beds. We’ve rounded up some of the most common misconceptions about adjustable beds so you can banish those myths and try this one of a kind sleeping experience for yourself. If you think an adjustable bed isn’t for you, think again. Once you try it, you’ll see what you’re missing.

Adjustable Beds Are Too Expensive

Adjustable beds aren’t cheap. Many people complain that this type of bed is too expensive, but generally those with this complaint haven’t tried an adjustable bed. Once you spend a night sleeping on a great bed with a quality mattress, you won’t be thinking so much about the expense, rather how good you feel.

Many adjustable bed owners simply look at their purchase as an investment. It might cost a bit upfront, but your bed base is probably a once in a lifetime purchase. Once you make the initial investment you have a bed for life. Over the years your purchase will amount to pennies a day for a quality of sleep that can’t be matched.

Adjustable Beds Need Special Sheets, Etc.

Another common misconception about adjustable beds is that they need special sheets, mattresses and bedding. This isn’t true. Adjustable bed bases use standard size mattress. You can choose your favorite type of mattress to use with your base. If you love memory foam, get a memory foam mattress. If you prefer a latex mattress, get one of those instead. Since adjustable beds use standard mattresses, they fit standard sheets. Sometimes the ends will pop off when the head or foot of the bed is adjusted, but if you want to avoid this, there are special adjustable bed sheets.

Adjustable Beds Are Only For People With Health Problems

Many people assume that adjustable beds are only for those with health problems or limited mobility, but this isn’t true. They are popular with those with special health concerns, but they are also popular with healthy people. Adjustable beds offer a variety of health benefits to all their users. Generally adjustable bed users notice a better quality of sleep and increased comfort when using an adjustable bed.

Adjustable beds are one of the best ways to sleep. If you want to improve the way you sleep and feel better, consider investing in an adjustable bed Today!!!!!

Sleep easy with Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a condition that occurs when a person is asleep, and it is caused by an obstruction to the air passageways of the nose, throat, and chest. The most common side effect of sleep apnea is snoring. This occurs when the air passageways become restricted to the point that even shallow inhalations and exhalations cause them to vibrate. Sleep apnea may be frightening because it is something that occurs while unconscious, and it is thus uncontrollable. The best way to prevent sleep apnea is to sleep in a position that helps the respiratory system function with ease. For this reason, physicians recommend sleeping upright to remove pressure from the chest and enable easy breathing throughout the night.

It is recommended that those with sleep apnea use a device to help them sleep in a semi-upright position to enable proper breathing throughout the night. For years, physicians typically recommended that individuals use pillows to prop themselves up in bed. This presents a problem for most sleepers, however, because pillows tend to deflate or shift during the night. As a result, a semi-upright position is nearly impossible to maintain through the night. The sleeper returns to a nearly flat position before long, causing the air passageways to become restricted and the side effects of sleep apnea to take hold.

Adjustable beds, such as those available from Tempur-pedic and Serta's I Comfort lines, will be very helpful for individuals who suffer with sleep apnea. Adjustable beds allow the head to be elevated. This prevents the tongue from falling back and blocking the airway. Once this situation is prevented, the person's sleep will no longer be interrupted. Adjustable beds naturally readjust the airway so that the sufferer will start having a good night's sleep.

Can Adjustable Beds Help Your Sleep Apnea?

Those who are overweight also suffer from this sleeping disorder. Due to their weight, the body is more prone to narrowing of airway and painful pressure points in the body. An overweight person's neck suffers as well. When there is much fat around the neck, the tissues causes the narrowing of airways. This is the reason why overweight people snores loudly at night. Even though the person is still overweight, adjustable beds can help. These beds support the body in a comfortable position in which the tongue will no longer fall back and cause breathing interruptions.

The most important thing one gets with an adjustable bed is the ability to sleep in a fixed angle throughout the night. This redistributes body weight across the body, relieving the upper torso from the pressure that typically causes sleep apnea. Sleeping in a semi-upright position also helps to prevent acid reflux and other GERD symptoms from forming. These new beds may also be used with a memory foam mattress to provide superior support for the hips, lower back, and shoulders. Such added support is ideal for individuals who suffer with arthritis pains as well. Sleeping in an upright and fully supported position relieves joints of the tension that causes morning stiffness, muscle tension, and arthritic pain.

Getting complete rest is essential to be energetic, revitalized, and productive the next day. Adjustable beds are a great investment for you to make sure that you will have complete rest. With an adjustable electric bed, all adjustments can be done using a remote control. With the different models of adjustable beds, you can pick portable, lighter or wall hugging ones to save space. There are also adjustable beds that come with massages to relax the body after a very tiring day.

Medical benefits of adjustable beds include relief from sleep apnea, acid reflux, arthritic pain, and muscle tension. Readers are encouraged to read more about how adjustable beds reduce the incidence of body pains, GERD symptoms, and sleep apnea.

Whether you  suffer from Sleep Apnea or not, an adjustable bed will improve your overall health as well as dramatically improve the quality of your sleep!

How long have you been sleeping on your mattress?

5 years? 10 years? Or even 20? It might be time to switch it up. The general rule of thumb is to replace at 8. That means to replace your old mattress every 8 years. Not everyone does, but technology does change, and the beds today are more advanced, and provide more support for getting the a good night’s sleep. Did you know that every 10 years the weight of a mattress doubles due to dead dust mites?  Also, that the average person sweats 4 gallons a month while they sleep? Gross.

That hopefully makes you think about how soon you will be replacing your mattress. If you recently bought a bed that’s great- we hope you are getting a good restful night’s sleep. If it’s coming up on that 8 year anniversary you might want to read our How To Buy a Mattress Guide.

Start by selecting a size. This is probably the easier of decisions to come. Make sure you measure the room where the mattress is going, so you know what you can accommodate. The following are the dimensions of mattresses:  Twin 38” x 75” – Twin XL 38” x 80” – Full 54” x 75” – Queen 60” x 80” – Traditional King 76” x 80” – Cal King 72” x 84”.

Pick your comfort next. Do you have a bad back? You might want to consider a firmer bed. Do you like to imagine you are sleeping on a cloud? A softer bed might be better for you. There are many levels of comfort: Firm, Plush, PillowTop, EuroTop, Pillow soft, and more. It is best to lay on each mattress. Once you start to narrow down what comfort level you like, spend at least 15 minutes on the mattress or mattresses you have selected. It is important to try out the mattresses in the position you typcially sleep in at home: side, stomach, back, etc.

Choosing a model before or after you lie on the mattress is fine. It may be tempting to buy the cheaper bed when comparing prices, however don’t let price decide your next bed. There is a reason there are top brand names of mattresses. Remember you will sleep on this mattress for a third of your life for the next few years. Make sure you educate yourself as much as possible. Also be sure to ask about company policies, comfort exchanges, and warranties. It is good to know all of this before purchasing.
The last and final decision is what your mattress will be on. Hopefully not the floor, as the bed is supposed to support you! You will need to decide between box spring, foundation or adjustable base.  Most people have a box spring and that is primarily what most manufacturers use, but there has been a recent spike in adjustable bases. Adjustable bases allow you to sleep more comfortably, watch TV, or use electronics in the bedroom. A box spring is a good choice as well: the coils inside the box spring act as little shock absorbers. A working box spring has been considered the best way to build a mattress set.

More recently, however, technology in beds has changed. A foundation is a non-flexing base that makes a great “do not disturb” sleep foundation. Simmons Beautyrest beds are known for using these foundations.

Lastly, highly consider purchasing a mattress protector or mattress cover. They can run you around $50 to $100 or more. This will be worth the investment in the case that any accidents occur. This will keep your mattress cleaner and protected from bodily fluids or other spills.

Come in and ask me about a complete sleep system today!!!

Is It Easier to Read in an Adjustable Bed?

Adjustable BedGrabbing a book and reading it while you nod off to sleep is one of life simplest pleasures, but sometimes it can be a bit uncomfortable. There is a solution besides skipping the book. An adjustable bed is a great way to get comfortable while reading, doing crafts, watching TV and living your life.

If you’ve been wanting to make extra time for reading in this coming year, consider getting an adjustable bed. With the right bed and a few simple changes to your lifestyle, you can explore new worlds as you immerse yourself in a great book. Whether you love classics, sci-fi or something else, an adjustable bed can change the way you read.

Sitting Up or Laying Down in Minutes

A push of a button is all it takes to transform an adjustable bed from laying down to sitting up. This makes it easy to climb into bed with a good book and find a comfortable position for reading. You’ll find beds with both wired and wireless remotes. Most beds require that both you and your partner share the same position, but as long as you both enjoy reading, this shouldn’t be a problem.

You’ll Read More When It’s Convenient

One of the biggest hurdles many people face when trying to find time to read is a busy schedule. They want to read more, but just don’t have the time. An adjustable bed can help with this problem. While it can’t make more time in the day, it can help you to read in the evenings rather than tossing and turning while you wait to fall asleep or dozing off in front of the TV. Setting up your bedroom with a bedside table, a lamp and a few good books will also help you to foster the habit. When it’s easy to read, you’ll find fewer excuses and you’ll be able to achieve your goal.

Make the commitment this year to read more. Whether it’s the magazine that you’ve been dying to read or the book that’s been on your reading list for years, an adjustable bed will help. You’ll find that reading is much more comfortable when you can position your body without having to use a mountain of pillows.

tempurpedic memory foam rhapsody bed mattress

New from Tempur-Pedic The Rhapsody bed features the all new Tempur HD material, a higher density version of their revolutionary memory foam. Give yourself the ultimate sleep experience and add an Advanced Ergo Adjustable Base! The benefits are instantly noticed when coupling a Tempurpedic Mattress with an adjustable base. One of the primary benefits of an adjustable sleep system is that it allows for ergonomically correct positioning which allows for natural curvature of the spine during sleep. An adjustable bed will allow you adjust the sleep surface to the angles that reduce strain on the heart and promote proper circulation, Because your body is not allowed to maintain proper posture when sleeping on a flat surface, tension on the muscles and joints is often increased. This greatly reduces the rest and recuperation that your muscles should experience during a full night of sleep. An adjustable bed allows you to provide proper, customized support to different areas of your body including: Neck and head, lower back, legs and knees, and your feet and ankles.

Synthetic energy in a can.

Energy drinks are quickly becoming popular in America; however some of them can be very dangerous. Certain energy drinks have more caffeine than an espresso and more sugar than pop, however marketing teams lead you to believe they have high amounts of vitamins and nutrients that you need so you figure you can take the good with the bad. However these drinks will push your heart into over drive and will cause it to beat in an unhealthy fashion then later take all the energy that it gave you away tenfold. This will make you feel worse than before; this is especially a problem in teenagers and young adults. They will drink a lot during one day which will cause TERRIBLE IRREVERSEABLE DAMAGE to your heart. Some new energy drinks are the ones that will last you a few hours and come in a small canister that can usually be ingested in a few seconds. These are great; they work perfectly and give you the energy but don't take any away from you. HOWEVER these can be dangerous just like any of the other ones, most people will drink a few in one sitting, DON'T DO THAT! This will increase the caffeine level and affect your health poorly. If you just drink one every few days (Like I do myself) then you will be fine, this will more over help you in the long run. This one includes some nice vitamins however it is not as good as a vitamin supplement or actual fruits and vegetables. So don't be dependent on these for you daily recommended doses of vitamins. You can some more helpful information about energy drinks here http://www.healthyplanetdiet.com/energy-drink-facts.html. Sometimes all you need is a new mattress to help you fall asleep easier. The new Tempur-pedic Simplicity line or the new Serta ISeries will allow you to get a great night of sleep. If you are still having trouble I suggest trying out an adjustable bed base, these allow you to achieve zero G sleep which will take a lot of pressure off your spine. As always come into American Mattress Gallery and we will do our best to give you a mattress that will allow you to no longer rely on energy drinks.
