Sleep Deprivation Symptoms are Damaging to Health and Sanity

Sleep is the most important thing that our bodies need to function properly. Not getting enough can really drag down your life, and as humans we need a lot of sleep (up to eight hours a night for most people, at a minimum! There have been many studies done on sleep, as much of it still remains a mystery to us, though the majority has to do with the brain. Sleep deprivation can really take a lot out of a person. Some symptoms of sleep deprivation are irritability, exhaustion, trouble with social situations, stress, memory loss, appetite changes, and difficulty concentrating.

Irritation in those who are severely sleep deprived is irritation at a whole other level. It is anger that builds and hatred that is unfounded and aimed at everything and everyone, despite situations. It makes people  be very short with others and to be snippy and angry at little things. Tiredness, another sign of sleep deprivation, creates people who want to do nothing but lie around on the couch. Sleep deprivation can be self induced but it can also be due to an illness or a sleep disorder. Insomnia is very often a problem, and often sleep talking or sleep terrors are as well; they disrupt REM sleep and make the sleep less restful.

People’s ability to interact with others and function in social situations can become impaired if they are severely sleep deprived. People have difficulty understanding what others are saying and have a hard time communicating their needs and thoughts.

Stress is already a large problem in our society. The American population is boiling over with stress and anxiety, and being sleep deprived makes this all the worse! It can feel as if the whole world is against you and can create an overwhelming sense of hopelessness. Being sleep deprived also messes with cognition, forgetfulness, and it can make it difficult to focus. This is bad for people driving, considering how dangerous it is to drive tired!

There are many treatments. A regular sleep schedule, having a healthy lifestyle, and medications are available. Being sure that you have the right mattress is also very important. The quality of your mattress determines the quality of your sleep, so be sure to visit your local mattress store as well as your doctor!
